New Yorkers Help Immigrant Runners Enjoy American Dream

Bill Staab, a former Peace Corps volunteer, retired from his career in steel sales and administration over a decade ago

He turned his energy to the West Side Runners’ Club in New York, of which he is the 42-year president. The 80-year-old longtime running enthusiast has since become a vital organizer for runners from Africa and South America. He has spent his time writing letters to support visa-seeking athletes and has spent close to $1 million of personal money on memberships and entry fees for West Side runners. Staab doesn’t take the winnings, but helps the winners cash their checks and use them to support their travels or aid people back home.

Girma Bekele Gebre did not qualify to have his name on his bib in the New York City Marathon this year, but the runner from Ethiopia finished third in the 26.2-mile race. Gebre’s success has raised the bar for West Side Runners. Gebre flew to the US for three or four months at a time, and Staab would plan almost weekly races for him across the country. Gebre is considering using the prize money for a house in his home country. Gebre has applied for a US Green Card, which would make living and competing in the US much more accessible.
